The UAF Department of English’s Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series, in partnership with 49 Writers and the National Book Foundation, is excited to welcome National Book Award-honored author Leigh Newman for a special literary event, Writing Home: Author Leigh Newman in Conversation. A native of Anchorage, Newman will read from her celebrated short story collection, Nobody Gets Out Alive (2022). These vivid stories delve into Alaska’s rich history and complex present, exploring themes of resilience, hope, and survival.

The is dedicated to celebrating the best in American literature, awarding the prestigious National Book Award each year to authors whose works shape the landscape of American letters. As one of the most significant literary prizes in the U.S., it shines a spotlight on writers who contribute to our cultural heritage and drive creative innovation.

is a nonprofit organization committed to supporting the literary arts in Alaska. Through workshops, readings, and community outreach, 49 Writers fosters a vibrant community of readers and writers, connecting Alaskans with new and established voices in literature. Their partnership with the National Book Foundation on this event is an exciting opportunity to bring world-class literary talent to the Last Frontier.

The event will feature a reading from Leigh Newman, followed by a conversation about her creative inspiration, writing craft, and the role of community in her stories. Attendees will also have the chance to participate in a live Q&A session.

Leigh Newman’s story collection Nobody Gets Out Alive was Longlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction. Her stories have appeared in Harper’s Magazine, The Paris Review, The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Mystery and Suspense, One Story, Tin House, Electric Literature, American Short Fiction, and McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern. Her memoir about growing up in Alaska, Still Points North was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize. In 2020, she was awarded a Pushcart Prize and an American Society of Magazine Editor’s prize, as well as received The Paris Review’s Terry Southern Prize for Humor. She currently serves as the Books Director for Oprah Daily and the Editorial Director of Oprah's Book Club.
