Paws & Paint: Fairbanks Goes Feline with Mobile Art Gallery
Somer Hahm, an adjunct drawing instructor at the 窪蹋勛圖厙 (UAF)
Department of Art, debuted her whimsical and interactive exhibit, "Cat Town," at the
Lemonade Stand, a mobile art gallery based in Fairbanks, Alaska. The exhibit premiered
on September 6th during First Friday outside the Bear Gallery. Cat Town invited
viewers to engage with approximately 300 magnetic cat-themed illustrations of recognizable
Fairbanks landmarks and personalities, allowing visitors to arrange them on a mural
painted inside the gallerys metal walls. Inspired by the style of childrens author/illustrator
Richard Scarry, the exhibit merges a playful folk-art aesthetic with Hahms creative
vision.
The materials used include polystyrene, rare earth magnets, and acrylic paint, making the interactive installation a unique, hands-on art experience.
Hahm described the project as both a joyful and challenging process. I had an inkling
of an idea for this installation over a year ago, and Ill be honestthe making of
it was filled with a mix of joy and self-doubt, she shared. Exploratory and differentI
wasnt even sure it could or would be anything. The process of pushing through to
realize the vision was GOOD WORK. She added that the installation resonates with
anyone who "was or is a child," blending lowbrow material with critical thought and
a contemporary approach. Its kitsch but in all seriousness well cared for and nostalgic
AF. A love letter inspired by a community that I care deeply about.
After its successful Fairbanks debut, Cat Town traveled to West Homer Elementary School, with public showings in Bunnells backyard on September 20-21, followed by a stop in Anchorage on September 22.
