Join journalists Andrew Kitchenman and Brian O’Donoghue for a compelling discussion on the role of media in the Arctic. They will share their personal and professional journeys in journalism, offering insights into what makes reporting in Alaska and the Arctic unique. The speakers will discuss their leadership styles, the challenges they face in covering Arctic issues, and the evolving landscape of media in the region. They will also provide valuable advice for those interested in pursuing careers in journalism and media in Alaska.

ϳԹ Andrew Kitchenman

Andrew Kitchenman has covered state government in Alaska since 2016, serving as the Capitol reporter for Alaska Public Media and KTOO before joining the Alaska Beacon. Before this, he covered state and local governments on the East Coast – primarily in New Jersey – for more than 15 years. He enjoys reading, watching movies and walking around Anchorage.

Alaska Beacon is part of States Newsroom, the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news organization.

ϳԹ Brian O’Donoghue

Professor Brian Patrick O’Donoghue holds an M.A. in Broadcast Journalism from New York University (1985) and a B.A. in History from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1977). He received the 2016 Alaska Press Club’s First Amendment Award for his investigative reporting that helped exonerate the Fairbanks Four. With a 35-year career in print, broadcast, and mobile journalism, O'Donoghue has documented major world events and authored books on his Iditarod and Yukon Quest experiences. He has been a faculty member at UAF Journalism since 2001 and served as past president of the Alaska Press Club.

ϳԹ the Arctic Leadership Lecture Series

The Arctic Leadership Lecture Series offers a unique blend of academic rigor and public engagement. Offered as PS F493/693 Arctic Leadership: Theory and Praxis in the 21st Century, this course invites students and community members alike to explore critical aspects of leadership in the Arctic.

The course is available for undergraduate and graduate students, with both in-person and online options. Undergraduate students can also choose an Honors section, offered for both online and in-person delivery. Community members may attend the lectures for free or enroll as non-degree-seeking students to participate fully in the course.

Lectures are held in the Schaible Auditorium every Thursday from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM AKST (open to the public). Classroom discussions continue from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM AKST (students only).
